Anna Politkovskaia was a fearless journalist who sought justice for victims of human rights abuses through her words. On October 7, 2006, she became a victim herself when she was murdered, many believe, in retribution for her work.
Politkovskaia’s investigative journalism criticized Vladimir Putin and exposed the grave human rights situation in Chechnya. According to the newspaper Novaia Gazeta, for which she wrote at the time of her death, she was working on an article about torture in Chechnya that was to be published in the paper's October 9 issue. Her killing on October 7 was likely linked to this report.
On the one-year anniversary of her death, the human rights community mourns the loss of her voice, strength, and determination to report from one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.
A memorial photo exhibit and candlelight vigil will be held in Anna Politkovskaia’s honor on Sunday October 7, 2007 from 11 am to 5 pm on Bolotnaya Square in Moscow. Human Rights Watch and a group of Russian NGOs including DEMOS and Memorial welcome the public to join the event.
