UNITED NATIONS: The following are key figures relating to international migration as compiled in a report by UN chief Kofi Annan Tuesday.

* Migrants worldwide numbered 191 million last year, up from 155 million in 1990.

* Roughly one third of them live in a developing country and came from another developing country, while another third live in a rich country and originated in a developing country.

* In 2005, Europe hosted 34 percent of all migrants, North America 23 percent, Asia 28 percent, Africa nine percent, Latin America and the Caribbean three percent, and Oceania three percent .

* Nearly 60 percent of international migrants (112 million) live in “high-income” countries that include Bahrain, Brunei, Kuwait, Qatar, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore.

* Nearly half of all migrants worldwide are women, and in the developed world, they are more numerous than their male counterparts.

* Between 1990 and 2005, at least 5.3 million illegal immigrants in both developed and developing countries received legal status.

* In 2000, about 20 million migrants with tertiary education and aged 25 or over lived in developed countries, up from 12 million in 1990.

* Between 33 and 55 percent of the highly educated people of developing countries Angola, Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Tanzania live in the industrialized world, as well as about 60 per cent of those from Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

* Remittances sent by migrants worldwide jumped from 102 billion dollars in 1995 to an estimated 232 billion dollars last year.

* The share of global remittances going to developing countries soared from 57 percent (58 billion dollars) in 1995 to 72 percent (167 billion) in 2005.

* Of the top 20 recipient countries which accounted for 66 percent of world remittances in 2004, eight were developing countries. One third of global remittances (in terms of total money received) went to just four countries: India, China, Mexico and France. afp
