Blessings for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Today 01/17/2011
We Have A Dream!
Today is the birthday celebration for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. After a lifetime of helping people and being the central leading figure for the Civil Rights Movement he was coldly assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was there in support of the black sanitary public works employees who had been on strike since March 12 for higher wages and better treatment. He was a great man gone too soon and the only civilian for whom we have a Federal Holiday.
Clearly Brother Martin was one of the most creative, dynamic and powerful leaders in the history of the world to come out of the United States. He was instrumental in raising mass consciousness among many poor oppressed people, especially Black African-Americans. He was a great strong leader for all of us, especially in those early years of social turmoil in the mid-60s when we were in urgent need of a man of courage and wisdom to help guide our mass movement forward.
He taught us how to stand up and take a stand based upon a strong belief in our humane rights, he taught us how to honor ourselves and respect other peoples, he taught how to march in unity together as one people, he taught us how to speak our minds with boldness and share our truths as we know them. Indeed, he helped to teach us how to be genuine humane beings who are ready, willing and able to make great sacrifices for great purposes.
He never laid a claim to perfection. All those who have negativity in their own lives and speak negative of him now need to examine their own hearts, their own relations with others who are not of their own 'racial' stock and question the validity of their own core values, humane ethics and spiritual principles.
So today we honor his memory of our beloved Brother Martin. We remember what he taught us so well about the valid principles of peaceful struggle, non-violence and civil disobedience in our continued fight for social justice in order to redeem all of humankind.
