Cesar Chavez Day 2006

Dear Friends:

The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, family and friends invite you to join tens of thousands of people across the country on and around Cesar Chavez Day 2006 by organizing a Chavez Service-Learning March and/or project in your community. As you may know, March 2006 marks the 40th anniversary of Cesar Chavez’s historic 1966 Peregrinación or Pilgrimage from Delano to the steps of the state Capitol in Sacramento to draw national attention to the struggles and conditions of farm workers. What better way to continue Cesar’s legacy than to organize people to address social justice issues in their own communities.

Chavez Day, a holiday in eight states (AZ, CA, CO, MI, NM, TX, UT, WI) and dozens of cities and counties throughout the nation, is an opportunity for all people to honor the legacy of Cesar Chavez by getting involved in their communities and making the holiday a day on, not a day off.

We have created a toolkit to assist you in the exciting work of planning and organizing a Chavez Service-Learning March and/or project.

In addition, we invite you to participate in our culmination celebration at the National Chavez Center on Saturday, April 22, 2006. The celebration will include the opening of the 1966 Peregrinación Photo exhibit, as well as a panel discussion by veterans of the original march about the significance of the 350-mile trek.

Together, Sí SE PUEDE!

Sincerely,

Helen F. Chavez

Below are pictures after La Marcha crossed Tower Bridge. There were others taking pictures, lots of colors, sounds and families!

I woke up early this morning, then, helped move a Sister Diana with John Foley’s Self-Help Program into a new Families First housing program near City College, so I could not make it to the beginning of the Marcha in West Sac @ the ILWU Longshoremens Hall Local 17, 600 4th Street, West Sacramento.

I met the Cesar Chavez Marcha just as the procession was passing across the Tower Bridge on Capitol Avenue. It was a huge march to me and I felt the power of the people of La Raza today. There was a kind of magical joyful feeling in the air as La Raza got a real sense of their power and their potential power.

I was kind of worried about storm clouds as the wacky weather forecasters predicted rain showers. It rained some, but throughout most of the day the weather was in our favor. I am sure the Spirit of Cesar Chavez was with us, you could feel it, tangible, real and immediate. It was in our eyes, our chants and our forward steps. To think that after the United Farm Workers Union had its First Great March to Sacramento FORTY YEARS ago that it was happening again. Awesome!

Below are pictures as I was walking towards the start of the Cesar Chavez March as it crossed the Tower Bridge into Sacramento.
