Dear Friend, Yesterday morning, RAN activists dropped a 70-foot banner in front of Niagara Falls declaring tar sands oil from Canada a threat to our clean energy future.
Today, we need your help to make sure that President Obama gets the message as he hosts Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's first official visit to the White House.
Harper, who once described the Kyoto Climate agreement as a "socialist scheme," opposes strong action on global warming. And now he's pushing U.S. dependence on dirty tar sands oil from Canada.
The tar sands has been called "the most destructive project on
earth." Its expansion is contaminating Canada's precious water supply, endangering wildlife, threatening Indigenous health and rights and accelerating climate change. In fact, extracting oil from the tar sands emits three times more global warming pollution than conventional oil. It's the dirtiest fuel on earth - even worse than coal.
We need you to help us welcome Prime Minister Harper to the
White House and let President Obama know he shouldn't fall for Harper's oil-slick pitch.

Canada is the largest supplier of oil to the U.S., and there is no oil dirtier than oil from their tar sands. The billions of dollars handed to Big Oil every year could instead be creating President Obama's clean energy economy by supporting new clean energy jobs. Last week we took action to block the State Department's permit for a tar sands oil pipeline from Canada that would cause even more global warming pollution and destroy critical wildlife habitat. This week, we need to let President Obama know that we still want a clean energy economy, and that investing in clean energy while buying tar sands oil is like smoking while running on a treadmill. Contact President Obama, and let him know that clean energy jobs in the United States should come before dirty oil from Canada.
Thank you for everything you do. Sincerely, Adrian Wilson Rainforest Action Network |
