Immigration Reform Next On White House Agenda

WASHINGTON, D.C. (YBH.ME) – Washington's "Gang of 100″, led by  Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, has gotten the ear of the White House and then some recently.

The Gang's letter last month to President Obama urging "CIR," or Comprehensive Immigration Reform, has borne fruit.  On November 13, Janet Napolitano, Director of Homeland Security,  called  a press conference to  announce her department was pressing for immigration reform in 2010.  She has long been tasked by the Obama Administration to do so.

She referred to what [she calls]  "the 'three-legged stool'  that includes a commitment to serious and effective enforcement, improved legal flows for families and workers, and a firm but fair way to deal with those who are already here."  That firm but fair solution includes amnesty for the estimated 12-20 million illegals currently in America.  The Administration emphasizes that making 12 million people legal will be a boon to government coffers, but opponents such as Republican Lamar Smith of Texas point out "how can they claim that enforcement is 'done' when there are more than 400 open miles of border with Mexico, hundreds of thousands of criminal and fugitive aliens and millions of illegal immigrants taking American jobs?"

Others note that, in a battered economy, granting legal access to  social safety net benefits for 12-20 million new citizens is fiscal suicide.  Meanwhile, a Zobgy International poll found 58 percent of Mexicans  believe amnesty will encourage illegal immigration to the United States, while 68 per cent believe immigrants to America should maintain loyalty to Mexico.  Though the national focus is on the overwhelming number of Hispanic illegals, a growing problem lies with Chinese human smugglers using loose Ecuadoran entry rules to get their "customers" into the hemisphere, and ultimately across the border at  Arizona.

Napolitano's suggested policies will sound familiar to Latino pressure groups, as they are straight from their talking points – amnesty for the undocumented and cross border flow being among the top two priorities noted on the La Raza website.  La Raza, which translates as "The Race" in English, is a high profile left-wing Latino advocacy group.

That the intended recipient of favorable legislation is shaping the debate and even its wording  is more than a little concerning to illegal immigration and amnesty opponents.   The Democrats believe amnesty will give them a huge leg-up in future U.S. elections as Latinos have been leaning Democrat in recent election cycles.
