Subject: Just bought Windows 7, do not have XP Install Discs

Jonathan (Chief Administrator) has sent you a message on Windows 7 QnA

I'm guessing from your message that XP is currently installed on your machine. You can install Windows 7 over XP without the XP discs providing that the XP Operating System on your machine is genuine and activated. Windows 7 will be installed using the custom installation setting. This will wipe out Windows XP so you should back up all of your personal data including documents, pictures, videos, MP3s and any other personal files that you can not afford to lose. The Windows 7 installation will also delete any and all currently installed programs so you should be sure to have all of your installation discs for your individual 3rd party programs ready to go so that they can be re-installed after your machine upgrades to Windows 7. You should also note that depending on the age and specifications of some programs designed for Windows XP, there's a chance that they may not function with Windows 7. This would most likely only apply to software that was purchased and/or installed near the beginning shelf-life of XP. Any XP software that you have that is compatible with Windows Vista will work with Windows 7. There's no need to apologize for sending me messages, this is exactly why Agave and I created this site, we're here to help. I can't always guarantee a quick response, but I will always responds none-the-less. Have a great day.

> Forgive any interruption. I bought this laptop from a former girlfriend and she did not have Install Discs. Can I still Update to WIndows 7 or do I need to buy a whole new XP Package? I just joined this group so I will keep studying. I am a creative writer in California, work in a homeless shelter and am more into posting about humane rights issues.
