COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS DEMAND SCHWARZENEGGER RELEASE DYING WOMAN FROM PRISON.

Press Conference and Public Rally
Tuesday, AUGUST 18, 2009
10am, 300 South Spring St., Los Angeles
Outside the Los Angeles Office of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

On Tuesday, August 18, 2009, community organizations in Los Angeles will
hold a press conference and public rally outside the Los Angeles Office of
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to demand the immediate release of
terminally ill inmate Deborah Peagler.  A few weeks ago the state parole
board agreed to give Peagler her freedom. Now the case sits on the governor's desk.
He has until Friday, August 21, 2009 to decide. Battered women's
groups, state politicians and thousands of others have signed petitions and
sent letters to the governor, all in favor of her release.
For 27 years Peagler has been a model inmate. She has led the church choir,
earned two associate college degrees, worked a number of jobs, tutored and
mentored other inmates, and participated in the Battered Women's Support
group. In February of 2009, Deborah was diagnosed with lung cancer and
doctors have predicted that she will not live to see 2010. If the governor
denies her release now, it will be a death sentence for Debbie.

Deborah's sister and many others are expected to attend the August 18 event
to urge Governor Schwarzenegger to allow a dying battered woman to spend her
final days with her family in Los Angeles County, outside of the prison
walls.
