FROM SIKKIM EXPRESS

GANGTOK: A Shaman, locally known as Jhakri, was brutally hacked to death yesterday by a rival Shaman yesterday at Melli Bazaar. The murder case then took a bizarre twist with the body of the suspected murderer being recovered from the Kalijhora side of West Bengal today.

Melli police informed that one Devendra Subba, a labourer by profession had been found hacked to death with a khukri at Melli bazaar yesterday. He had ventured to the market on the Haat day to do his usual business of carrying loads.

Subba's body was recovered lying by his wife near the Melli bazaar post office.

Following the incident, police conducted an intense search in the area. The blood stains at the murder site led to the banks of the adjoining Teesta river where a surprise were in store for the police.

At the river banks, the blood trail led the police to stumble with abandoned clothes – a white shirt, one black plant and a pair of black plastic boots with blood stains. The clothes had been abandoned at the newly constructed wall on the river banks.

One local woman Bobby Tamang came forward to claim that the clothes belonged to her husband, Ran Bahadur Sarki alias Jungey. Police conducted another search for Sarki but could not locate him yesterday and finally recovered his body from Kalijora in West Bengal side.

Investigations conducted yesterday and today by the police has led to the assumptions that Subba had been murdered by Sarki who then later was found mysteriously dead.

It is revealed that both the deceased were engaged in Shaman business and the murder has been attributed to rivalry between the duo Shamans. It is informed that before the murder, Subba was gaining popularity at Melli Bazaar while Sarki was losing his clients to him. This could have led to the murder of Subba allegedly by Sarki yesterday.

The reasons and other details regarding the mysterious death of Sarki are being investigated by Melli police.
