homeless people who are into progressive recovery in order to better their lives and
people in recovery need to see the interconnections between these kinds of issues,
even if it is controversial. We must go far beyond traditional A.A. type approaches

There is a great need for basic community-wide education on this and other core issues.

Subject: Prop 36 Hearing Today: Thank you!
Dear Prop. 36 supporters,
A huge thanks to everyone who turned out at the hearing in Sacramento today in support of treatment and of Prop. 36 in particular. Another big thanks to others for singing our letter or for sending letters of your own. I know that we – even those of us who couldn't make it – were heard today.
I don't think I was imagining it: the legislators were hearing our proposals. To the dozen or so Prop 36 clients and grads who spoke today about how important the program has been in your lives – you were extremely powerful! You made an important difference today. Thank you!
To the 40 or so others who mentioned Prop. 36, you were amazing. I think the Prop. 36 folks were the most "on message" of advocates there today! Over and over again we called for reduced spending on prison for drug possession, for hiking the alcohol excise fee and for using Byrne Grant money for Prop. 36. I could see Legislators nodding their heads (vigorously!) – especially in support of using federal stimulus (Bryne Grant) dollars to shore up Prop. 36.
Thank you all for your commitment to treatment and to protecting Prop. 36. You were a formidable force today – and I'm confident that we were heard loud and clear. We have a potentially long fight ahead of us still. Pace yourself, but please stay involved! Keep your fingers crossed and keep calling your legislators in support of Prop. 36! I'll keep you posted on opportunities as they develop.
