Tent city cleanup progresses as homeless keep moving

Published: Thursday, Apr. 16, 2009 - 11:06 am

City crews with garbage trucks today picked up trash left behind at Sacramento's original tent city, the homeless encampment that has been the focus of nationwide attention.

The area north of downtown now is empty, allowing workers, including work project violators using hand tools, to pick up the trash.

At an encampment to the east, where some people moved after being told to vacate tent city, the homeless were being moved once again. Police said a private property owner at that new site has plans to fence it off on Friday.

After police told the homeless about those plans, most began to depart, leaving about seven tents.

Homeless activists, including Sister Libby Fernandez of Loaves and Fishes, prayed with the remaining homeless. Activists vowed to commit acts of civil disobedience if necessary to draw attention to the issue of homelessness.

Comment: The whole Tent City phenomena in Sacramento has gotten local, regional, national and even global coverage. I believe because it is an obvious reflection of the sad state of affairs in Sacramento and at least on the national level.

When you come to understand that the homeless in America are our own domestic refugees then you can begin to fathom the connections and interconnections between domestic refugees, so-called illegal immigrants who remain in the shadows for fear of being captured by the INS and the whole phenomena of displaced refugee people on a global scale. These are real human beings, not monsters!

The homeless are persecuted in their own way and where are they suppose to flee?

Into the American River to drown?!?

Long ago a homeless man once told me, "I just want a place where I can be! Just be!"

Shame on Sacramento!!!
