Dear friends:  Please consider supporting Alexandra Cox's library
project for the New York juvenile justice system.

Dear friends and family,

Many of you know that I'm doing research for my Ph.D in New York's
juvenile justice system.  I travel regularly to three juvenile prisons
in upstate New York to talk to young people there.  The state of the
libraries in these facilities is absolutely dismal--they are
understocked, have little variety, and haven't been updated in years.
Unfortunately, there seems to be little impetus on the part of the
State to improve the libraries.  Yet, all of the kids wish that they
could have more books available to them.  So, I've consulted with
administrators in these facilities, and they've agreed to let me bring
some books in.

I'm writing all of you to ask for your help with this effort.  I've
compiled a wish list on Amazon of a number of books based on the
recommendations of kids, friends and colleagues.  It would be amazing
to be able to give some of these books to the prisons, and I am
reaching out to family and friends because I can't do this all by
myself!  Any help that you can provide would be so great, and I can
assure you that the impact would be immense.

I'm working in a girls' facility, a facility for boys with more
serious crimes (and who tend to be older), and a facility for younger
boys with less serious crimes.

Here is the wishlist: http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/2A6DK7WEVHESH

So, here is how it works:

1) You can choose any copy of the book, new or used.

2) You can send me any suggestions -- in fact, they are welcome.

3)  The books will be sent directly to me, and I will transport them
to the facilities.  I will be here until November, and so will
continue to take them until then (I promise, I won't be running some
kind of book re-selling scheme out of my apartment, but if you feel
more comfortable sending them directly to the facility, just let me
know and we can find a way).

4)  Please pass this along to anyone you know and who might be
interested in helping out!

I'm aiming to combine the book donations with some workshops and
performances about reading and writing, with the help of friends and
colleagues.  If you have any other suggestions about this project,
please do let me know!

And, thank you so so much in advance!

all best,
alexandra
