Thanks Paula ~ I hope it works out well, though my main struggle is in the inner city. I hope Padilla remains steadfast. I will pass it on for what it is worth. ~Brother Peter S. Lopez

15/07 - Miracle at Loaves!
Dawna cut open a bell pepper today in Loaves & Fishes' kitchen, and on the inside of the stem, low and behold, there was an exact representation of The happy face. (Coming soon to E-Bay - if no one eats it)

Monkey and Gypsy showed up (from the new, new tent city) to see if anyone wanted a ride out to Natomas. They said they have portapotties. They need toilet paper, tents, tarps, food, ice, cooking ware.
Angie and I road out to the tent city in Natomas. Its on Leonard Padilla's land. They are calling it "A Little Piece of Heaven". There's about 6 or 7 tents, 2 portapotties, people are bringing out dirt for their planned agricultural endeavors. We talked to a couple out there and taped them on a video camera. They said they need a lot and the record is on video. Angie wrote down batteries (all sizes), tents & blankets, toilet paper, water and food, wash tubs and wash boards. Also, they need help getting started with garden equipment and supplies and seeds for winder plantings. The tent city is far away from civilization as most of us know it (except for the track homes not too far away). I didn't see any stores. Gas and food would be very helpful, especially considering the location. Angie likened them to "new pioneers".

If you'd like to donate, directions are: off Highway 5, go east on Del Paso Road. Turn right on El Centro (it turns into Bayou). Its in the field right after North Natomas Self Storage. (Paula)

We are working on it collaboratively, even though that wasn't mentioned in the article. Paula of SHOC types all the dentists' addresses and phone numbers into a spreadsheet, then transfers those addresses into a merge file with letters and lables. Then Victoria from Health Care for the Homeless prints out the letters and labels at her office. Then Jeanine of Cottage Housing labels the envelopes and stuffs the letters. Victoria keeps a database and Jeanine is main contact person. I like the collaboration, just like the dentist of Sacramento are starting to collaborate in fixing the teeth of Sacramento's homeless population.
November 4--6 - 11/5/07 - New Tent City (North B Street, west of 7th Street) was given notice last week by railroad police to vacate by 6:30 am this morning. There were about 50 or more tents with probably more residents that were allowed to stay for about a month. Late this morning there were 15 people that did not vacate and they were not evicted or taken to jail (Friday, police said that if they were still there, they would be taken to jail.) This morning there were many media reps waiting around.
11/6/07 some are still there. Winter overflow will open this Friday, earlier than previously planned due to the tent city in the news.

Recently, a tent city onwas broken up. Leonard Padilla offered campers a place for a tent city in Natomas. A few people have accepted his offer. Last week there were about 6 tents out there.
