FYI: 50th Congressional District: Key election to Change Congress and for Immigrant Rights

Hola Companeros ~ From where I sit up here safe and sound in Sacramento, it looks like Latinos could easily swing the Election in Favor of Busby.
It looks like Olga Diaz would be a good candidate for CIty Council and I hope she raises her sights.
Video Link of Olga speaking etc.=
I think the strategic long-term ideal would be to get a regular Community Center and/or a Voter Education Office that could keep up voter interest and enthusiasm during the usually dormant yet key time in between elections. Plus, commitment by election campaigns for support. Elections come and go, but alas the two--party only system is still the dominant system in electoral politics.
Eventually, the whole Electoral Collage system should be dumped! I remember Hilary Clinton talked about that after Kerry lost to Bush this last time... but since she has been quiet on that front. She was really underestimated by many people who did not see her self-concept as a real candidate herself... but that's another story. ~Peta

Ernest,
This June she was viciously attacked when she urged immigrants to get involved in the elections, and tens of thousands have been spent attacking her efforts to speak to Latino and immigrant issues. Last Sunday I was there in Escondido and saw her talking to dozens of Latino voters and community people seeking their vote. In 2000 the vote was small of Latinos, the numbers of registered was very low in the district and the percentage turning out was very low.
If we can get the Latinos to turn out the candidates will change, we should be those that mobilize most in our community, once we do others will follow. Rosalio

I was at a luncheon where Busby was invited to speak. This was in 2000. She was asked by a person identifying himself as a community leader and Hispanic what she was doing to get the "Hispanic Vote".
She answered, "Nothing, Hispanics don't vote and even if they did, they don't make much difference."
She's a hypocrite, but UN-f*cking-FORTUNATE for us, we have to choose between a blatant racist and a closet racist.
She has promised to fight the Antis so, we should vote for her until we can run someone else.

Compas,
The race for Californias 50th Congressional District in North San Diego County is where fulfilling the slogan "hoy marchamos manana votamos" can make an important difference.
Extreme anti immigrant right wing Republican Brian Bilbray is again facing a stiff challenge from moderate Democrat Francine Busby who is gaining momentum as the November 7 election nears. Bilbray needed nearly $5 million and scores of professional Republican campaigners nationawide to narrowly defeat Busby 49-46% in a special election last June to replace jailed former Republican Congressman Duke Cunningham.
On October 17 results of a Survey USA poll showed Busby trailing again 49-46 after trailing by 14 percentage points in September. If the nationwide trend of increasing opposition to extremist Republicans continues in the District Busby. The Latino vote could make a difference.
The largest concentration of Latinos in the District is in Escondido where Latinos mke up over 40% of the population. In the last election only 13% of the Latino voters turned out. This could change significantly this November. Last week after a month of controversy right wing Republicans on the Escondido City Council passed a law to cancel the business permits and levy fines on landlords who rent to "illegal alliens".
This was passed despite strong opposition from Latinos, Democrats with significan topposition from moderate Republicans from Escondido and surrounding areas. The anti immigrant racism parrallels Bilbrays attack ads against Busby's for her support for comprehensive immigration reform. Bilbray joined the anti immigrant House Caucus led by Rep Tom Tancredo even before he was sworn in.
Political pundits wrote off Busby's chances this summer figuring it would be harder to defeat him as an incumbent. Thus few national funds have come to Busby, 98% of here support is from individuals. But now Republican incumbents are becoming an endangered species. If the Latino outrage at the right wing Republican racism translates into more voters in Escondido and the 50th District as a whole it could help put Busby over the top.
This is really a possibility. First because there is a strong young Latina candidate for City Council of Escondido who is vigourously opposed to the anti immigrant law, has strong qualifications and and who is getting bipartisan support for the non partisan office. Olga Diaz, a who owns and runs a successful coffee shop, is a trained accountant has won the endorsement not only of the Democratic Party and labor but also the Republican oriented San Diego Union Tribune and the North County Times and the local Spanish language press. She is a dynamic candiate campaigning daily. Latinos have their own candidate to be proud of, a key ingredient for a bigger turnout.
Second the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project has opened a 13 unit phone bank in Escondido calling on over 8000 low propensity latino voters in the 50th District to vote. This alone would normally add 2000-3000 more latino voters, strong campaigning could add to this.
Finally there is a growing core of multiracial volunteers in the Escondido working to get out a bigger Latino vote for Busby, Garcia and other Democrats with door to door and phone work. Victory will be difficult as Republican registration is very high. The biggest vote, especially of Latinos, against the extremist Republicans Rep Bilbray and Escondido City Councilwoman Marie Waldron will by a strong defense against the racism, defeat of the racists would have national impact!
If you can find a way to help get out the Latino vote in Escondido in the next 13 days it will really make a difference. Volunteers are taking literature and talking to Latino voters door to door and by phone every day out of the North County Democrat Unity office at 135 W. Mission Ave #211 in Escondido telephone 760-743-6915, or email me.
Attached to this post is a bilingual leaflet volunteers have developed to show Latino voters in the District the big difference between Busby and Bilbray.
