6-13-2006: OASIS Spanish-Speaking Community Panelist

Hola Hermana Nancy and All ~ Thanks for the information yesterday you Emailed to the list. I am posting this for future reference.

This evening I checked out this presentation and found it educational. The speakers were Rachel Guerrero, Juana Lorena Gonzalez, Adina Medina, Jeannette Zanipatin and a couple of others. The speakers spoke about the struggles and challenges of immigrants making it inside the United States. I had heard of La Familia Counselng Center before and its great program, but this event gave me a better understanding about OASIS.

It would be great for there to be such educational presentations at least once a month for continued community education. What I thought was cool is that there were some headsets with earphones for English-listening people to hear the Spanish-speakers who were not bi-lingual in English via the headsets thanks to an interpreter who was present.

We must always strive to overcome language barriers and in a way one gets twice the knowledge. I took a few pixs with my cheap digital camera and Googled some more information for future reference.
Plus, there were informational pamphlets available and good refreshments. I was hungry so the bite of chicken, arroz and frijoles hit the spot.

Venceremos!
~Peta de Aztlan
