The most relevant community group for helping people with survival services here in Sacramento is Loaves and Fishes:
Sacramento Loaves & Fishes: Survival Services for the Homeless:
http://www.sacramentoloavesandfishes.org/
“Loaves & Fishes is a non-profit organization providing service in a spirit of love, hospitality and generosity to all those who come for assistance.
We are governed by a Board of Directors composed of representatives from the various programs of Loaves & Fishes and leaders selected from the community who are concerned about the needs of the homeless and indigent poor.
We are motivated to serve in Loaves & Fishes out of compassion for the poor and disadvantaged. Through our actions we hope to communicate our respect and love for all who come to Loaves & Fishes for assistance.
We recognize the dignity and spiritual destiny of each person and hope by our attitude of hospitality and love to nourish not only the physical needs of those who come to Loaves & Fishes, but also their spiritual need for love, acceptance, respect and friendship. We serve each person with the knowledge that "as often as you did it for one of my least brothers and sisters, you did it for me."
~ Matthew 25:40.
We are called not only to respond to the material and spiritual needs of the individuals who turn to Loaves & Fishes, but also advocate with them and for them. Therefore, we call upon the community to be aware of its responsibility in both the causes and solutions of hunger and homelessness, the absence of basic health care, unemployment, and attitudes which rob our sisters and brothers of dignity, self-respect and self-confidence.
Our roots are in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and we continue to affirm and act out this faith. At the same time we welcome as allies and co-workers people whose roots are in other faiths and traditions. We respect and affirm each other in our differences. Furthermore, we welcome and serve as sisters and brothers all who come to Loaves & Fishes.
We value collaborating with diverse groups in the work of Loaves & Fishes and actively seek to involve volunteers from a variety of backgrounds. Within the guiding principles listed above, we respect the individual spirit and expression of each of the groups.”

THIS WEEK'S EASY ONLINE ACTIONS (For more alerts visit:
Tell the Senate to Block Another Trillion Dollar Tax Cut for the Super Wealthy: The Senate is set to consider next week proposals to eliminate or "reform" the estate tax. Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) has proposed a "reform" that would eliminate most of this tax. But the estate tax is needed to slow the division of our nation into permanent hereditary classes, and the revenue it raises is desperately needed right now to pay for essential services like Medicaid and student loans. These services are under threat from huge deficits driven by reckless spending on an illegal war and on other destructive tax cuts. Write to your Senators now!
Tell GOP leaders: It's time for genuine immigration reform
: By a decisive bipartisan vote, on Thursday, May 25, the U.S. Senate passed comprehensive immigration reform, including the historic AgJobs compromise negotiated by the United Farm Workers and the nation's growers. This bill is a dramatic improvement over the enforcement-only bill, approved last December by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, HR 4437, but it is not enough. The fight is far from over. The Senate's comprehensive bill now goes to a joint House-Senate conference committee. Its members are appointed by Senate Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). The conference committee will also consider the cruel and punitive bill passed by the House making felons out of all undocumented workers. Anti-immigrant Republicans, especially in the House, vow to kill any measure providing a path to hard-earned legal status for undocumented workers. E-mail Senator Frist, Speaker Hastert and your congressmembers . Tell them a genuine solution to our broken immigration system requires a workable legalization program for hardworking, taxpaying immigrants.
TAKE ACTION TO SAVE 80,000 AMERICAN WORKERS NOW: Back in March, your quick action was crucial in getting unemployment benefits extended for survivors of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Now the time has come to act again. Unless Congress votes to help them by the end of the day Friday, 80,000 hurricane survivors will start to lose their jobless benefits. Click the link below to take action:
HELP SAVE NORTH AMERICAN BIRDS: At a meeting in late April, the Manitoba government failed to set a firm date for fulfilling its promise to permanently protect a stretch of the Canadian boreal forest that provides crucial habitat for North America's migratory birds and other wildlife. Manitoba officials have repeatedly pledged support for designating 10.6 million acres of this ancient forest as a United Nations World Heritage Site. But first, the province must put in place lasting protections for the traditional territory of the Poplar River First Nation. Poplar River completed a land use plan last November that called for protection of approximately 90 percent of its traditional lands. With the threat of hydropower development, logging and other destructive activity looming over these wildlands, it is critical that Manitoba officials take immediate action to formally safeguard the area. » Urge the Manitoba government to grant permanent protection to the Poplar River's traditional territory by the end of June.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Tabling: Want to spread the word about human, earth, and animal liberation?
Are you outgoing, personable, and generally informed on HEAL's issues and campaigns? Want to learn more? Well, volunteer to host an information table for HEAL in Washington or Indiana! We can supply you with all the equipment and supplies you need and seasoned volunteers can work with you during your first few sessions so you feel comfortable with questions and the routine.
Speakers Needed: Are you comfortable speaking in front of large groups? We are looking for volunteers to participate in educating the public on a variety of HEAL issues. We're also looking for survivors of behavior modification programs who would like to be interviewed as part of the documentary on behavior modification in the US that HEAL is working on with a prominent filmmaker. Please e-mail us at heal@heal-online.org with subject documentary and include in the body your complete contact information if you'd like to participate. Thank you.
Banner Drops: Want to wave at drivers and send progressive messages out via public display? Care about Primate Freedom? Then sign up to help with a banner drop at a local overpass. It's a great way to expose abuse and garner attention for our cause(s)! Contact us to volunteer!
Collect Signatures for Petitions: HEAL is working on three petitions right now! If you have time between classes, you can collect signatures for our petitions at various public locations of your choice! If you are a UW student, you may wish to collect signatures for the Alternatives to Dissection at the UW petition. You can help! Whether you are a UW student or one of our national or international members, you can help by collecting signatures for our Close Provo Canyon School Petition. Just e-mail us at heal@heal-online.org and request a blank copy of the petition of your choice, print it, and begin your petition experience! It's that easy!
Homeless Outreach: Collect clean used or new clothing, hygeine products
(toiletries/sanitary napkins/tampons/etc.), gift cards or certificates (Grocery/Restaurant/Entertainment), for U-District homeless. Drop off locations available upon request.
Adopt an Inmate: Penpal with one of our inmates. Check out the website at
www.heal-online.org/adopt.htm for ideas and profiles!
Organization and Research: Are you more of a private person? Would you prefer to put in time from the comfort of your home rather than deal with the public? Well, there are many ways you can help HEAL from the comfort of your home. Right now, we need volunteers to create a comprehensive list of Washington hospitals, doctors, psychologists, and psychiatrists including their contact information so we can send out letters requesting they do not, under any circumstances, recommend or refer abusive behavior modification programs to their patients or parents of patients. If you are good at compiling lists and organizing, this is a great task for you! Also, we need someone to go through the action alerts at
www.heal-online.org/#action and compile a list of all the dead action alerts. If the link is dead or the action completed, it needs to be removed. Our webmaster has limited time and doesn't always catch the dead links. So, simple as pie, check the links, e-mail us at heal@heal-online.org with the list of dead links, and tada you are done!
Creative Input: Are you a creative person? We are creating a book of inspirational art, poetry, essays, short stories, and photos that capture the spirit of liberation! These can be fictional or nonfictional and should be submitted to heal@heal-online.org subject: liberation book. Or, are you a survivor of an abusive behavior modification program? We are also creating a book of survivor testimonials regarding abusive behavior modification programs. If you would like to submit your experience for this project, please e-mail us at heal@heal-online.org subject: survivor book and include the statement "Everything in this statement is true." For both books, please submit a note of permission stating "I give HEAL permission to use my (story/art/photo/poetry/etc.). I confirm that this is my work and is not credited to anyone but me." We are also working on a multi-media campaign which includes advertisements for print, radio, and television and public access television programs on our primary issue: teen liberty. If you'd like to help with any of this, please contact us at heal@heal-online.org .
Fundraising: There are many projects we'd like to do that cost money. We would like to hold a public forum on behavior modification programs very soon. We want Alexia Parks, author of "An American Gulag", to come speak. She requires $500 for airfare, hotel, and transportation for all speaking engagements.
We would also like to gain access to either www.fastcase.com or the full version of Lexis Nexis for research. This access costs approximately $500 a year. We also need funds for our multi-media campaign mentioned above. And, we need funds to help us get to the upcoming conferences on Teen Liberty and Exposing Cults. You can donate online by using PayPal at www.paypal.com and sending funds to:
heal@heal-online.org following their instructions.
You can earmark your donations for specific campaigns if you wish by making a notation of the campaign(s) you wish to support in the memo/subject field of your donation. You can donate in person at our events. Or, you can get HEAL activist gear (message shirts, stickers, and more) by visiting www.cafeshops.com/heal.
All help is much appreciated!

This is a reply to Peta de Aztlan who wrote: "We want Alexia Parks to come and speak."
This is Alexia Parks, and I'd be happy to.... That is, if your request is still current, AND I have the time available on my calendar.
