Hey everyone,

The Oct 29 group met tonight at the ZSC office to hear a report by Efren Gutierrez on the National Alliance for Human Rights meeting that was held in Riverside, California on February 11th. The focus of the meeting was to organize a campaign of opposition to HR 4437, a vicious anti-immigrant bill that passed the House of Representatives last December 16th. This law aims to criminalize not only immigrants, but anyone who assists them in any way. It also calls for the building of a wall along the border, dividing Mexico and the U.S. It will go to the Senate in March, and if it passes there, will become law. A number of actions in oppostiion to HR 4437 were agreed on.

1. One of the actions proposed at the Riverside meeting was a National Day of Action on March 10th, which will call on nuestra gente and supporters to take the day off, skip school, and gather in mass to make a strong public statement against this racist legislation. The Sacramento Oct 29 group decided to join with other community groups and organizations across the country in this effort, and are already beginning to make the preparations for this event.

We plan to invite all interested individuals and organizations to join in this extremely important event! Time is short, as the Senate will begin to debate this measure in mid-March. We must make our voices heard, loudly and clearly, before then!

If you can help in any way, please contact us through the Zapatista office. The phone and e-mail are in the signature below. We will be sending out additional information as things fall into place, but we want to spread the word as quickly and a widely as possible, so please forward this message widely to friends, family, and co-workers!

2. Another campaign being organized is to present a resolution condemning HR 4437 to the Sacramento City Council. Similar resolutions have already been passed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities. Maywood, California, a small city near Los Angeles, not only passed a resolution, but has declared itself an Immigrant Sanctuary, part of a newly developing national network of cities offering sanctuary to immigrants!

3. The national meeting in Riverside also proposed to organize a delegation to Mexico, in order to build a binational front against these attacks on immigrant workers. It was suggested that each region elect a delegate (or delegates?) to take part in this international meeting. A meeting of the delegates is scheduled for April 8th in Riverside, so there should be some local meetings before that date to work out the details and select a representative (or representatives) from the Sacramento area.

These are only the highlights from the meeting, and more information will be forthcoming as things develop. Your suggestions and input are encouraged, and will help turn the tide! Let's come together, and stop HR 4437 in its tracks!

Immigrant rights are Human Rights!
No human being is illegal!

For the Oct 29 group,

Mario Galvan
